What Type of SEO Should I Focus On for My Business?

If you have been marketing your business online and trying to grow using digital means, you have probably heard of local SEO and organic SEO. But what exactly is the difference? Which type of SEO should you primarily focus on? Read on to find out!

So you’ve created your website, updated your Google listing – what’s next? Let’s say that you’re the owner of a Thai restaurant and you want potential customers to be able to see you on Google. How do you ensure that you appear in search results next to other competitors in your area? That’s where local SEO comes in.

What is Local SEO?

Local SEO is focused more on the geographic standpoint of a business. Location plays a key role with this type of SEO. If a person searches for “Thai food near me” or “Thai food in San Diego,” for example, the search engine knows that the primary intent behind the search is an effort to find a Thai restaurant near the user’s location.

By optimizing local SEO, local businesses around a certain geographic area have a better chance of being seen on Google or other search engines. (And even if you type just “Thai food” into Google, it will assume that you are searching for a nearby restaurant). There are probably multiple restaurants similar to yours nearby, so if a user is doing a general search for a Thai restaurant, you want to be sure that your business listing comes up in their search results.

What is Organic SEO?

Organic SEO, on the other hand, has less to do with nearby business locations and more to do with general information that Google takes into consideration. What if you are suddenly feeling inspired and feel like trying to cook your own Thai food instead of ordering it? You would Google search something along the lines of “pad Thai recipe” (or another Thai dish). You would then be shown organic results based on what the search engine (Google, for example) has deemed to be most valid. That particular search doesn’t really have anything to do with location of a specific business; rather, you are trying to find a good recipe for a dish and want to see the most relevant results.

Both types of SEO are important and valuable depending on the type of information you are trying to promote on Google. If you are a small business trying to attract more customers within a certain geography, you may want to focus on local SEO efforts. Or maybe you sell a certain product online, like jewelry or phone accessories. If you are an e-commerce business with no physical store location, your efforts are better allocated toward organic SEO because you would want your website to show up when specific key words are being searched.

(Note: Many of the factors used to optimize SEO work simultaneously for local and organic SEO.) But if your website isn’t necessarily for a tangible product/service and you’re trying to draw traffic into your blog, for example, organic SEO may be more beneficial for your purposes.
